African Union Reacts to U.S. President's Latest Travel Ban

Addis Ababa, June 5, 2025 (ENA) — The African Union Commission (AUC) has voiced concerns regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest travel restriction order.

Out of the 12 countries impacted by President Trump’s executive order announced on Wednesday evening, 7 are located in Africa, with an additional 3 African nations subject to travel limitations.

The countries affected by the complete ban include Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan.

Burundi, Sierra Leone, and Togo encounter limitations.

"The African Union Commission acknowledges the recent announcement made by the U.S. government implementing additional travel limitations that affect citizens from multiple nations, encompassing some within Africa," stated the AUC in their official release.

The organization urged Washington to participate in a productive discussion with the nations involved.

The Commission is prepared to assist initiatives that foster understanding, address concerns, and enhance collaboration between Africa and the United States.

Acknowledging each nation’s authority to safeguard its boundaries and guarantee citizen safety, the African Union Commission humbly requests that the United States undertake these responsibilities in a way that is measured, grounded in facts, and mindful of the enduring alliance between the U.S. and Africa, as noted in the statement.

The Commission continues to be worried about the possible adverse effects these measures might have on personal connections, academic exchanges, business interactions, and the wider diplomatic relationships that have taken years to develop meticulously.

Africa and the United States have common goals in advancing peace, economic growth, and international collaboration.

The African Union Commission humbly requests the U.S. Administration to adopt a more collaborative stance and to participate in productive discussions with the respective nations involved.

The Commission calls for open dialogue and, when needed, cooperative actions to tackle any foundational concerns that might have led to this decision.
