AU Voices Concern Over New US Travel Ban

The African Union has expressed worry about a newly implemented travel restriction introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

This restriction applies to 12 countries, which include seven from Africa: Somalia, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, and Sudan.

The other nations impacted included Yemen, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Haiti, and Iran.

Apart from the comprehensive ban, the United States implemented a restricted travel policy affecting seven nations—Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela—which permits conditional entry for individuals holding specific temporary employment visas.

Trump stated that the decision followed a recent incident involving a flamethrower attack on a Jewish protest in Colorado by an Egyptian national.

Significantly, Egypt did not appear on the list of countries subject to the travel ban.

The AU cautioned about the implementation of such measures, warning that they might have adverse effects on diplomacy, education, and economics in the relationships between the United States and the countries impacted.

On Thursday, the African Union issued a statement asserting that these travel limitations could weaken "the connections between individuals, academic exchanges, business interactions, and wider diplomatic relationships that have developed with the U.S. over many years."

The African Union urged the U.S. government to employ a " consultative method and participate in productive discussions with the nations involved."
