"Don’t merely present yourself as appealing; place yourself where you can make a positive impact." — Bernard Kelvin Clive
By Bernard Kelvin Clive
We’re continuing our series on Gifted but Gated —A thorough exploration of tackling meaningful tasks and establishing a personal brand that transcends boundaries, eliminates obstacles, and endures beyond companies. Today, let’s delve into something intimate yet pragmatic.
Discovering the Gift
Many years back, during my time at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, I enrolled in a program at the College of Art focused on Rural Art. Out of all the subjects we covered, Sculpture caught my attention, particularly a course called "Woodwork." This subject proved intriguing although it diverged somewhat from what typically drew my interest artistically.
I recall some of my classmates, such as Kwame Kyre Diabor and Preko George—who were truly remarkable individuals. These fellows had the ability to take a simple piece of wood, add a few sketches with chalk or pencils, and begin sculpting. Before long, stunning shapes and figures would appear out of the timber. This always left me amazed. I frequently found myself wondering, "How did they visualize this?"
I gave it my best shot. I carved away, watched closely, and even tried to grasp the underlying principles, yet nothing made sense to me. Though I possessed artistic talent in various fields, sculpting eluded me completely. That’s when I understood an important truth: we all have distinct talents.
Grasping Your Area of Brilliance
Each of us harbors a wish to achieve remarkable feats, acquire knowledge, and develop—yet there lies an individual domain where we feel most at home. It’s a task tailor-made for each person—one that comes effortlessly when pursued. Even though others may attempt to master the same endeavor, their execution will likely differ from ours. This distinction underscores the contrast between mere proficiency and innate talent.
Your talent is frequently the point at which labor ceases to feel like effort. Instead, it transforms into pleasure. A vocation. A means of conveying the brilliance and poise that were instilled in you since your earliest days.
Michelangelo famously stated, "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free." This encapsulates the heart of genuine gift-giving: recognizing potential that others might not see and then making it real.
The Work That Matters
Therefore, I ask you: What do you perceive in your craftsmanship, in your profession, in your art?
Perhaps, similar to me, you possess the skill to craft innovative material that others struggle to envision. Perhaps you discern structures amidst chaos. Possibly, you motivate individuals through your capacity for communication or active listening.
That’s your gift.
Discover your niche. Uncover your unique expression. Embrace your talents and develop your profession or enterprise accordingly. By matching your skills with your mission, labor evolves from obligation to joy. It’s more than giving up hours; it’s sharing yourself fully. And the world takes notice.
From Gift to Brand
This marks the beginning of brand development—which flows from within outward. The cornerstone of a genuine personal brand isn’t a sleek logo, a meticulously managed social media profile, or a series of trendy terms. Rather, it all begins with acknowledging and honing your inherent talent.
When you receive that present, enhance it with dedication and start refining it. Perfect your art via diligent practice, continuous education, and constructive criticism. This process shapes proficiency. Whether you communicate verbally, pen down ideas, create designs, construct projects, or offer advice—your deep knowledge becomes evident. It radiates clearly in everything you do.
Enduring branding is branding that emerges from your talent.
Skill and Execution
Today, numerous individuals succumb to the pitfall of style over substance. It’s prevalent across platforms like LinkedIn and various forms of social media where people present an immaculate image online, yet upon being employed, they often disappoint with their performance. There's a significant disconnect between how things appear and what actually gets done. This issue has become quite serious.
If gift-giving isn't something you're grounded in, and you haven't invested time into honing this ability, the outcomes will reveal your shortcomings. This doesn't merely harm your professional trajectory; it creates a fissure within the core of your personal brand.
Create a brand with substance rather than solely for aesthetics. Establish one that can withstand critical examination. Base it on honesty, skill, and proven knowledge. The objective isn't merely to dazzle others; it's to make a meaningful difference in their lives.
A Brand Synced with Purpose
In today’s era of artificial intelligence, when technologies like deepfakes and virtual avatars can generate nearly any representation of an individual, genuine authenticity has grown increasingly precious. Individuals aren’t merely seeking beauty; they crave honesty. They desire empathy. They seek out companies that embody ordinary folks tackling actual issues using practical answers.
Hence, allow your brand to be an extension of who you truly are. Let it embody your voice, your perspective, and your principles. Use it to cater to your audience in harmony with your essence, your beliefs, and your abilities.
By taking this approach, you will not just discover fulfillment; you'll also uncover various revenue sources, as well as attract valuable partners, collaborators, and clients who appreciate your contributions.
The Right Audience Matters
Allow me to revisit the carving analogy. An exquisite sculpture, regardless of its genius, might fail to impress an individual with no appreciation for art. Similarly, your creations, your brand, and your talent require reaching the appropriate audience to truly shine.
Avoid spending effort persuading those who do not recognize your worth. Rather, ensure your brand reaches an audience that values what you offer and is ready to compensate you accordingly. Achieving success depends both on your capabilities and on connecting with the appropriate community—a group that acknowledges your significance and is eager to reward the value you provide.
Purpose, Peace, and Prosperity
By synchronizing your talent with your career, your target demographic, and your personal identity, inner harmony starts to emerge. You derive satisfaction from your activities. Indeed, abundance ensues—covering not only financial aspects but also enhancing mental clarity, emotional stability, and spiritual health.
That's the type of brand I envision you crafting—from the ground up. A brand grounded in authenticity, honed through expertise, and driven by a clear mission. A brand that reshapes lives, addresses challenges, and improves the world for future generations.
Therefore, as we embark on this continued journey Gifted but Gated, I urge you to focus on meaningful tasks. Discover your talents, hone your abilities, cater to your audience, and develop a brand that embodies your authentic self.
The world is eager to see your talent. Instead of merely presenting yourself, place yourself strategically. Rather than just working hard, take time to heal. Instead of just posting, refine your content. Always show up at your finest.
Ponder and Take Action on These Points:
Uncover and Embrace Your Inner Talent
Spend some time this week contemplating what tasks come easily to you—those things that you can do without much effort while others find them challenging. Jot these down. They form the core of your genuine personal brand.
Align Your Profession or Skill With Your Talent
Assess your present job or enterprise. Is it enabling you to utilize your talents effectively? If not, start taking deliberate actions to make changes—this could involve acquiring a new ability, adjusting your concentration area, or positioning yourself in an environment where you can thrive better.
Position Your Brand for the Correct Demographic
Instead of just creating, focus on connecting. Identify exactly who requires your offering and find the platforms, communities, or customers who will appreciate, recognize, and compensate you accordingly. Targeted exposure is more effective than aggressive promotion.
Should you require assistance throughout your journey—whether through coaching, consulting, or speaking services—I am readily available.
Bear in mind! The best is yours.
