Savar, June 5 -- On Thursday, thousands of vacationers, mostly ready-made garment industry employees, encountered significant traffic jams, exorbitant prices, and overfilled transportation services as they left Savar and neighboring industrial zones prior to Eid.
Severe congestion occurred throughout the day from early morning until noon on both the Dhaka-Aricha and Nabinagar-Chandra highways because of a significant increase in vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
The situation worsened further due to continuous rainfall since the morning, compounding the hardship of travellers.
Capitalizing on the Eid rush, transportation employees purportedly imposed additional charges, compelling passengers to pay significantly higher rates than usual.
A number of travelers resorted to paying extra money to reserve their spots as they booked their journeys.
Starting from dawn, lengthy lines gathered at transportation counters throughout Savar and nearby regions.
The key locations including Hemayetpur, Amin Bazar, Genda, Ulail, Nabinagar, Baipail, Sripur, and Jirani Bazaar experienced significant traffic jams. Travelers reported issues like inadequate seating and exorbitant ticket costs.
Parvin Akhter Paru, a garments factory employee awaiting her journey to Rangpur, expressed frustration: "I have been standing here for hours. Despite seats being available, they demand almost twice the usual price. What should be a Tk 650 ticket is now going for between Tk 1,200 and Tk 1,400."
Mia, another traveler bound for Jashore, expressed her concern by saying, "They want Tk 800 for a Tk 400 journey. What can we do? We are poor people."
