GWL to Take Action: Prosecute Illegals Tapping Water Connections

The management of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Accra West region has decisively moved to address unauthorized water connections that persistently impact their services.

After conducting a recent inspection, the Region identified approximately 1,500 instances of unauthorized connections spread throughout its 12 operational districts from the final quarter of 2024 through the initial quarter of 2025.

To demonstrate its dedication to the public good and uphold its promise to serve community interests, the company provided a leniency window for unauthorized water consumers. This allowed those involved to step forward willingly, rectify their situations, and avoid any legal repercussions. However, up until now, more than 800 people have not responded to repeated appeals urging them to take advantage of this offer.

These unauthorized connections not only rob GWL of essential income but also lead to increased water loss and service interruptions for legitimate consumers. Consequently, GWL Accra West Region has decided to take legal action against those who refuse to comply. The company will collaborate closely with the Ghana Police Service to make sure that every violator faces severe legal consequences.

Unauthorized water connections and associated violations are considered acts of theft and illegality, posing a threat to the sustainability of the company. GWL cannot permit the deeds of a few individuals to compromise the efforts of its employees or the entitlements of its dedicated patrons. Therefore, anyone failing to legalise their connections will face arrest and prosecution as per the law.

The management keeps urging people to inform them about every case of unauthorized connections within their neighborhoods, as they remain dedicated to achieving fair water distribution and enhancing services for all Ghanaian citizens.
