Nintendo Targets Another Hit: New Console Aims to Match Switch's Success

Nintendo aims to replicate the remarkable popularity of the Switch once its enhanced successor arrives in stores on Thursday, anticipating robust initial sales even though the device comes at a steep cost.

Boasting a larger display and enhanced computational capabilities, the Switch 2 represents an improvement over its precursor. The original model has reportedly sold 152 million units since hitting the market in 2017, securing its position as the third highest-selling video gaming system ever.

However, even with enthusiastic fanfare and strong pre-order sales, Nintendo faces challenges such as uncertainties regarding U.S. trade tariffs and doubts about whether sufficient numbers of consumers will be ready to make purchases.

According to President Shuntaro Furukawa during a financial results briefing in May, the Switch 2 comes with a comparatively higher price tag than the initial model.

"Even though there is enthusiasm surrounding the launch, we understand that maintaining this excitement over an extended period won’t be simple," he cautioned.

The sales of the Switch, capable of connecting to a television or being enjoyed on-the-go, surged thanks to the appeal of titles such as "Animal Crossing," making it a popular choice during pandemic-related isolation periods.

The Japanese firm anticipates selling around 15 million Switch 2 units during this fiscal year, which is comparable to the sales of the first console in a similar timeframe following its launch.

The latest gadget retails for $449.99 in the U.S., making it over one-third pricier compared to the Switch. However, a version exclusive to Japan comes with a lower price tag of 49,980 yen ($350). Additionally, upcoming New Switch 2 games like "Donkey Kong Bonanza" and "Mario Kart World," where players can venture beyond networked play, will have higher prices than current Switch game offerings.

The majority of exclusive titles designed for the Switch will also be playable on the Switch 2, with popular franchises like "Zelda: Breath of the Wild" receiving upgraded versions tailored for the updated console.

'Super excited'

"Individuals were quite surprised by the cost of 'Mario Kart World,' being the very first $80 title we have encountered from Nintendo," stated Krysta Yang from the podcast Kit & Krysta.

Although the firm will "need to put in extra effort" to persuade more occasional players that an upgrade is worthwhile,Nintendo enthusiasts are "highly enthusiastic,"she stated to AFP.

The Switch 2 will feature eight times more memory than the original Switch, and its controllers, which connect using magnets, can also function similar to a desktop computer mouse.

Even though the new console doesn’t differ significantly from its predecessor, many individuals have commented, "'This is exactly what I desired; I wanted a more potent Switch – keep the core elements intact,'" explained Yang, who previously worked at Nintendo.

David Gibson from MST Financial noted that new features enabling users to chat during online gameplay and to momentarily share games with their friends might also prove very appealing.

He told AFP that this approach aims to attract viewers who have become accustomed to streaming games, watching gameplay videos, and engaging in gaming activities online. He also predicted that theSwitch 2 would set new sales records upon release.

Success is vital for Nintendo.

Even though the company behind "Super Mario" is expanding into theme parks and successful movies, approximately 90 percent of its income reportedly originates from the Switch business, according to analysts.

Tariff trouble?

However, its pre-orders have been fully reserved in the U.S. market and other regions, with the firm highlighting exceptionally strong interest in Japan.

In May, Furukawa stated that Nintendo’s financial forecasts rely on the presumption of U.S. tariffs at 10 percent for goods manufactured in Japan, Vietnam, and Cambodia, along with a significantly higher tariff of 145 percent on items from China.

He mentioned that hardware destined for North America is primarily manufactured in Vietnam.

Trump's hefty so-called "reciprocal" tariff of 46 percent on goods from Vietnam is on pause, while those on China have been slashed.

Yang noted that tariff uncertainty might actually prompt consumers to purchase a Switch 2 earlier, as they fear the price may increase.

Charlotte Massicault, who leads multimedia and gaming initiatives at the major French retailer Fnac Darty, informed AFP that the advance orders have far exceeded their expectations.

She stated that for us, this would set a records in initial day sales for a gaming console.

She stated that the Switch 2 is "more oriented towards gamers rather than being a family-oriented product," as opposed to the original Switch.

Nintendo aimed for this outcome, and it succeeded.
