Polytechnics Should Award Degrees, NAPS Urges Tinubu and NASS

The National Association of Polytechnic Students has called for the legislative upgrade of polytechnics to degree-awarding institutions.

On Monday, the organization issued a statement signed by its President, Comrade Eshiofune Oghayan, stating that this enhancement would address the ongoing divide between individuals with Higher National Diplomas and those holding Bachelor of Science degrees.

"We call upon the President and the National Assembly to grant polytechnic institutions the authority to confer Bachelor of Technology and Bachelor of Science in Technology degrees. Implementing this change would address the ongoing divide between individuals holding HND and BSc qualifications," the statement noted.

As part of their policy initiatives, the students suggested implementing a Student Insurance Program, launching mental health awareness drives, and enhancing campus safety protocols.

NAPS similarly expressed its dedication to backing the administration as well as ensuring accountability among government officials whose actions might contradict the President’s educational objectives.

The organization suggested multiple programs such as a Student Insurance Plan, awareness campaigns for mental well-being, and efforts to enhance campus safety.

The declaration also marked June 12 as "Adupe Day" to recognize President Bola Tinubu’s significant financial commitment to education, accompanied by a nationwide procession scheduled for that day.

The students have named the day "Adupe Day" — which means "thank you" in Yoruba — to commemorate what they called the administration’s exceptional financial dedication to education.

The organization likewise praised the Tinubu-led government for earmarking N2.52 trillion for the education sector in the 2025 national budget, marking a 133% rise from what was allocated in 2023.

NAPS also pointed out several significant accomplishments, such as approving N683.4 billion for initiatives in higher education, disbursing more than N104 billion via the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, and initiating the 3 Million Technical Talent program designed to address shortages in digital skills.

President Tinubu starkly contrasts with previous administrations that typically treated education as an afterthought in national progress, showing instead that education serves as the bedrock rather than just an addition.

As the National Association of Polytechnic Students, we firmly state that we will keep supporting this administration as they have backed us. We stand as your partners, not your co-conspirators.

"We declare June 12, 2025, as a Day of Historical Appreciation for students throughout Nigeria’s universities, polytechnics, colleges, and technical institutions. On this day, these students will participate in the One Million Student March," according to the statement.

The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) mentioned that the planned "One Million Student March" anticipates attracting attendees from various polytechnics, technical institutes, and colleges nationwide. They also noted that this gathering aims to serve as a tranquil expression of appreciation.
