By Ernest Bako WUBONTO

Ghana's automotive and tourism sector experienced a significant milestone with the inauguration of 'Despite Automobile Museum,' the nation's premier automobile museum, located in East Legon, Accra. This event was graced by Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The inaugural event, taking place on Sunday, June 1, 2025, celebrated the first public display of media tycoon Osei Kwame Despite’s exclusive assortment of antique luxury vehicles—a cherished endeavor spanning thirty years.

This top spot for car aficionados, history buffs, group outings, and family visits boasts world-class luxury vintage cars, ensuring an unparalleled experience for visitors.

The carefully curated collection showcases some of the world’s most iconic automobiles, each with a rich history and a story to tell.

"Whether your interest lies in admiring timeless vintage automobiles, tracing the journey of opulence and speed, or merely savoring an unparalleled event, our museum caters to all tastes. Dive into a realm where creativity intersects with elegance, and allow the essence of automotive mastery to ignite your imagination," as was mentioned.

From timeless classics to cutting-edge wonders, this remarkable exhibition marks the first time Dr. Despite has unveiled his lifetime dedication to cars to the public, and it's utterly astounding.

The museum features a unique collection, showcasing legendary cars that have never been viewed closely in Ghana before, aiming to offer visitors an immersive experience.

One distinctive aspect of this museum is its self-guided nature, thanks to digital signs accompanying every car. These signs enable guests to uncover the narratives, artistry, and cultural significance tied to each iconic automobile.

This inadvertently provides a vibrant means to delve into history, technology, and design via the realm of vintage and unusual automobiles for educational aims. It serves as a perfect destination for school trips, company events, and memorable gatherings.

A Mission in Motion, Not Just a Gallery

For Kwame Despite, this goes beyond being just a museum; it’s "A mission in motion." The 'Despite Auto Museum' emerged from his vision, sparked by an early passion for automobiles that he had since childhood.

Initially driven by an appreciation for stunning machinery, this evolved into a passionate lifetime accumulation of items that have remained unseen by the public up till today.

My goal is to craft an unparalleled automobile adventure that merges education, appreciation, and pride in being Ghanaian. I aspire to motivate upcoming generations through showcasing engineering prowess, design excellence, and unwavering determination.

"This isn’t merely a location for viewing vehicles; it’s an environment designed to inspire, ignite creativity, and demonstrate that world-class experiences can also be found right here in Ghana," he stated.
