Summer Train Travel Takes Off: Weekends See Sold-Out Routes

There is high demand for trains traveling from Hanoi to various popular tourist spots in central and southern regions, particularly during weekends when sleeper berths tend to be fully booked. This surge can be attributed to enhanced pricing strategies and better service offerings.

Thu Minh from Hanoi tried to purchase train tickets online for her family's trip to Da Nang City this weekend, only to be disappointed as she discovered numerous trains were completely sold out.

Out of the nine trains operating at that time, SE17 offered only two sleeper berths, while SE11 had three available.

Trains heading to Nghe An and Quang Binh Province also had very limited sleeper berths available, with several trains completely sold out.

Minh stated, "I wasn’t anticipating how difficult it would be to obtain train tickets in June. We may need to reschedule our family trip for next month instead."

The ticketing site of the Vietnam Railways Corporation indicates that trains traveling from Hanoi to central and southern regions offer only a few sleeper berths during weekends throughout June.

A representative of the Railway Transport Joint Stock Company stated that more than 620,000 tickets have been sold up until now during the summer season. They also anticipate an uptick in ridership by approximately 8-10% compared to last year once the holiday period concludes.

Experts credit the strong interest to affordable ticket prices for family units, complimentary travel for kids under six years old, and the presence of numerous amenities designed for parents with small children. Party bookings receive discounts ranging from 3% to 15%.

The quality of service and amenities has significantly improved over recent years. Numerous routes traverse stunning landscapes, which makes train travel to central Vietnam particularly favored.

Despite the fact that even premium trains connecting Hanoi and Da Nang can be completely booked, fares for sleeper berths can rise as high as VND1.3 million (USD 50).
