NANS Pushes for New Institutions in FCT

NANS Urges FCTA to Expand Educational Institutions

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and other relevant authorities to focus on establishing more educational institutions within the FCT. This initiative comes as a response to the increasing population in the nation’s capital and the pressing need to improve access to education at all levels.

Comrade Wele ThankGod Chimenem, the Chairman of the NANS Joint Campus Committee (JCC) for the FCT, made this appeal in a statement released on Sunday in Abuja. He emphasized that the growing number of young people seeking quality education necessitates the creation of more schools, universities, and technical institutions.

“We are appealing to the Federal Capital Territory Administration and relevant authorities to prioritize the establishment of more educational institutions within the FCT,” Chimenem stated. “This includes the opening of additional universities, polytechnics, schools of Agriculture, Technical Institutions, and other tertiary institutions to cater to the growing population of young people seeking quality education.”

Chimenem also praised the Federal Government for its recent decision to approve the Federal Polytechnic at Gwarinpa and the University of Science and Technology in Abaji. These developments were seen as positive steps toward addressing the educational needs of the FCT population.

He highlighted that education plays a vital role in national development. As the seat of government, the FCT should lead by example by ensuring that all citizens have access to affordable and quality education.

“NANS FCT believes that opening more schools will help reduce the number of out-of-school children, ease the burden on the existing overstretched institutions, and create opportunities for skill acquisition and youth empowerment across the territory,” he said.

Chimenem urged the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, along with relevant agencies and stakeholders, to act swiftly in the interest of the future of young people and the overall development of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Importance of Expanding Education in FCT

Expanding the number of educational institutions in the FCT is not just a matter of convenience; it is a necessity for sustainable growth. With the population continuously rising, the demand for quality education is becoming more pronounced. The current system is under significant pressure, with many students unable to secure admission into existing institutions.

By investing in new schools and universities, the government can ensure that more students have access to education. This, in turn, can lead to a more skilled workforce, which is essential for economic development and national progress.

Moreover, the establishment of more technical and vocational institutions can provide young people with practical skills that are in high demand in the job market. This approach can help reduce unemployment and foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Key Steps to Achieve Educational Expansion

  1. Increased Funding: Allocating more resources to education is crucial for building new institutions and upgrading existing ones.
  2. Public-Private Partnerships: Encouraging collaboration between the government and private sector can help fund and manage new educational projects.
  3. Policy Reforms: Implementing policies that support the expansion of education, such as streamlined approval processes for new institutions.
  4. Community Involvement: Engaging local communities in the planning and management of educational institutions can ensure that they meet the specific needs of the population.

Conclusion

The call from NANS underscores the urgent need for action in the FCT. With the right strategies and commitments, the region can become a model for educational excellence in Nigeria. By prioritizing the establishment of more educational institutions, the government can address the challenges posed by population growth and ensure that all young people have the opportunity to succeed.
