Edo Schools Launch STEAM Labs

Enhancing Education Through STEAM Laboratories in Edo State

In a significant move to improve the quality of education, the NEPL/Seplat Energy Joint Venture has taken an active role in establishing three Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) laboratories in public schools across Edo State. These new facilities are part of a broader initiative aimed at equipping students with the skills necessary for the challenges of the 21st century.

The newly commissioned labs are located in three prominent public schools: Niger College, Army Day Secondary School, and Oba Akenzua Secondary School. This brings the total number of STEAM laboratories established by NEPL/Seplat for public schools in the state to six, showcasing a growing commitment to educational development.

During the handover ceremony, Chioma Afe, the director of external affairs and social performance at Seplat, emphasized the importance of these laboratories. She stated that the initiative is part of a collaborative effort between Seplat and the Edo State government to enhance educational opportunities for students. According to Afe, the STEAM approach is designed to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation among students, preparing them for future challenges.

Afe further explained that the STEAM method promotes a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to learning. This encourages students to explore the connections between various subjects, thereby igniting their curiosity and creativity. The labs are equipped with modern tools such as computer systems, internet access, and subject-specific materials, aiming to transform the way science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics are taught in secondary schools.

Governor Okpebholo, represented by Dr. Paddy Iyamu, the Commissioner for Education, praised Seplat and NEPL for their investment in the future of Edo State's youth through education. He urged students and school authorities to make the most of the equipment while safeguarding it carefully. Dr. Iyamu described the laboratories as a testament to the strategic partnership between the energy company and the state government in ensuring that every child in Edo has access to quality education.

Paul Omenogor, the deputy manager for sustainability at NEPL, also addressed the students, school authorities, and host community, urging them to maximize the use of the facilities and protect them. This, he believed, would encourage the joint venture partners to invest further in similar projects.

Andrew Ijegbai, the Edo State Commissioner for Mining, Oil and Gas, commended the joint venture for its support and investment in quality education for the citizens. He highlighted the significance of such initiatives in contributing to the overall development of the state.

The principals of the beneficiary schools—Godwin Idemudia, Osemwenkhae Ezeilekhae, and Ipogah Michael—pledged to ensure the effective use and sustainability of the laboratories. They described the facilities as a game-changer for both students and teachers, offering new opportunities for learning and growth.

Through these efforts, NEPL/Seplat Energy Joint Venture continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of Edo State. By investing in STEAM laboratories, they are not only enhancing the quality of education but also laying the foundation for a brighter future for the students of Edo.
