Understanding the Loss of the Nyx Capsule
A German startup is currently investigating the communication failure that occurred with a space capsule during its return to Earth. The capsule, named Nyx, was intended to bring back ashes of deceased individuals to their families after an extraterrestrial journey. This mission, known as the "Nyx Mission Possible," aimed to provide a unique and meaningful way for families to honor their loved ones.
The Nyx craft was part of a project by The Exploration Company (TEC), a Bavaria-based startup. TEC has confirmed that it is looking into the loss of a space capsule carrying the ashes of 166 people. The capsule was scheduled to return to Earth after orbiting the planet twice in late June. However, an unexpected issue led to the capsule being lost during its planned re-entry.
What Did TEC Say About the Missing Capsule?
In a statement shared on LinkedIn, TEC explained that they had successfully re-established communication with the capsule upon reentry, following the usual blackout caused by the heat. However, this communication was lost again at an altitude of 26 kilometers, just before the transonic phase that precedes parachute deployment.
"From an orbital altitude of 550 kilometers [about 340 miles], the capsule re-entered successfully in a controlled manner, with communication established post maximum heat. Communications were, however, lost at 26km altitude, just before the transonic phase preceding the opening of the parachutes."
To better understand what happened, TEC has formed an independent investigation team. The results of their findings will be shared with clients, investors, and internal teams. In an earlier statement, TEC expressed regret to all the clients who had entrusted them with their payloads.
More Details About the Flight
Charles Chafer, co-founder and CEO of Celestis, a Texas-based memorial space flight company that hired TEC, mentioned that this was the first time such a reentry attempt had been made. He stated that due to the unforeseen event, they believe they will not be able to recover or return the flight capsules aboard.
"We share in the disappointment of our families, and we offer our sincerest gratitude for their trust."
Chafer also hoped that families would find some peace in knowing their loved ones were part of a historic journey. He emphasized that the ashes are now resting in the vastness of the Pacific, similar to a traditional and honored sea scattering.
Additional Contents in the Nyx Capsule
In addition to human remains, the Nyx capsule carried cannabis plant material and seeds for a citizen science project. This project aims to study the viability of growing cannabis on Mars. The inclusion of these items highlights the diverse purposes of space missions and the potential for scientific exploration beyond traditional boundaries.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on understanding the technical challenges faced during the re-entry and ensuring that future missions can learn from this experience. The emotional impact on the families involved underscores the importance of these memorial flights, which blend technology, science, and personal remembrance in a unique way.
