Undersecretary Exposes University Research Challenges

Addressing Challenges in Scientific Research in Sudan

Port Sudan, July 5, 2025 – The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Professor Mohamed Hassan Dahab, has highlighted significant challenges that are currently affecting scientific research at Sudanese universities and research centers. He pointed out that the ongoing conflict involving rebel militias has severely disrupted research activities. In addition to the war, a lack of funding is also a major obstacle, which has led to a decline in the quality and scope of scientific research in some institutions.

To address these issues, a workshop on artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on scientific research was recently launched at Red Sea University in Port Sudan. The event brought together a wide range of participants, including the Secretary-General of the Federation of Arab Scientific Research Councils, Abdul Majeed Bin Amara, along with numerous experts, specialists, university professors, and students.

Professor Dahab urged researchers and university professors to engage with the Federation of Arab Scientific Research Councils to explore the opportunities available for advancing scientific research. He emphasized the importance of the workshop, stating that it is crucial for the country’s progress, development, and revival. He noted that all nations have advanced through the outcomes of scientific research.

Dahab mentioned that significant steps have already been taken in this area, leveraging the available resources. He also highlighted several agreements between the Ministry of Higher Education and the Federation of Arab Scientific Research Councils, describing their collaboration as highly effective in the field of scientific research.

A Step Toward Stability and Recovery

Abdul-Majeed Bin Amara, the Secretary-General of the Federation of Arab Scientific Research Councils, stated that the workshop was part of efforts to restore normalcy and stability to Sudan after the war. He noted that Sudanese universities have continued their research and academic activities throughout the conflict, creating spaces for communication between students and faculty despite the challenging circumstances. He described this perseverance as a form of resistance and encouraged Sudanese universities to seize the available opportunities.

Bin Amara also shared that Sudan has historically played a critical role in supporting the Federation of Arab Scientific Research Councils, particularly during the Iraq War in the early 1990s. He expressed pride in being one of the first representatives from international organizations to attend a forum in Sudan since the outbreak of the war. He added that scientific research continues even in countries facing conflicts or tensions, and the Federation covers all expenses for Sudanese researchers.

Emphasizing the Role of AI in Scientific Advancement

Professor Abdel-Gadir Badawi, Vice-Chancellor of Red Sea University, stressed the significance of the workshop and the papers presented during the event. He noted that the workshop was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, the Federation of Arab Scientific Research Councils, and Red Sea University itself. He highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence and the technological advancements accompanying scientific research.

Badawi explained that the workshop serves as a foundational milestone for contributing meaningfully to the pursuit of science and knowledge. He emphasized that the university system should not be based solely on tradition but on continuous scientific development, keeping up with new trends, promoting research, and linking it to local communities.

He also outlined the requirements for using artificial intelligence in scientific research and publishing, pointing out its benefits in enhancing universities and curricula. The workshop's recommendations will be fully implemented and monitored.

Key Presentations and Contributions

Two key working papers were presented during the workshop. The first, titled "Artificial Intelligence in Scientific Research," was delivered by Professor Ahmed Hassan Fahal. The second paper, "Fifth-Generation Universities: Opportunities, Business, and Ambition," was presented by Engineer Walid Mohammed Al Mubarak. These contributions provided valuable insights into the future of research and education in the context of technological innovation.

The event underscored the growing importance of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of scientific research and higher education in Sudan. It also highlighted the collaborative efforts among various stakeholders to overcome existing challenges and foster sustainable development.
