George Ruto’s Matrix matatu in accident days after others involving Mood, Money Fest

  • George Ruto’s Embakasi matatu fleet found itself under an unflattering spotlight after being linked to accidents in quick succession
  • What began with viral footage of Money Fest in a boda mishap was soon followed by Mood’s rear-end collision in Eldoret
  • Matrix then rammed another car along Outering Road, leaving Kenyans wondering whether it’s bad luck or reckless driving

George Ruto's fleet of Embakasi matatus has been courting trouble in recent times after a series of accidents.

Money Fest, Mood, and most recently, Matrix, have all been involved in accidents within a span of weeks.

In August, Money Fest, one of the most talked-about Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), returned to the headlines after being linked to a road mishap in Nairobi.

Have all of George Ruto's matatus been in accidents?

A widely shared clip showed the matatu stationary in the middle of Outering Road, near the Mutindwa footbridge, after hitting a boda boda rider.

Onlookers quickly gathered as passengers disembarked, while another vehicle navigated past the scene.

Although the circumstances of the collision were not immediately clear, the footage sparked heated debate online, with users divided over who was responsible.

Then Mood, touted as Kenya’s first matatu with solar panels, followed suit. The PSV was in Eldoret when it was involved in a minor road mishap in Eldoret Town.

The flashy vehicle, which had drawn attention at its launch, was struck from behind by another PSV.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the damage was minimal. Images circulating online showed a traffic officer examining the scene as part of routine investigations.

The matatu sustained a dent where the 14-seater had collided with it, though an official police statement on the incident has yet to be released.

And now, Matrix has followed suit.

A video captured along Outering Road showed the matatu had rammed into another vehicle from behind.

The driver of another vehicle captured a small crowd of onlookers next to the vehicle whose rear was extensively damaged. A few metres ahead was the green and black-themed PSV.

The clip showed that the matatu had a damaged front.

"It seems this (matatu) family is cursed," the caption on the video read.

What did Kenyans say about George Ruto's matatus?

Kenyans had mixed views about the accident, with some saying that it is the nature of the road. However, others said that the spate of accidents was too high.

Here are some of the comments:

Samuel Kiarie:

“That is the nature of this business.”

Wajuu Kamau:

“Drama with each passing day. At least when they were operating in Rongai, we climbed on the roof but the vehicles were undamaged.”

Nï Far Bêê:

“Ayayaya GK zimeanza mambo yao sasa.”

Ule Boy:

“Wah, jana Mood, leo Matrix.”
