Sri Lanka Awaits Starlink Launch as Final Touches Approach

Sri Lanka, June 2 — According to a declaration posted on their official Meta page by the Ministry of Digital Economy on Saturday (31), the country has finalized all procedures needed for launching the satellite internet service provider Starlink. The service will commence operations as soon as Starlink delivers the essential technical interfaces.

"Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne stated that the government has met all necessary conditions for the operational deployment of Starlink. The launch will move forward as soon as the company provides the additional dashboards," according to the announcement.

Deputy Minister Weeraratne expressed these views during an elevated discussion in Singapore alongside U.S. Department of State Ambassador Steve Lang, who holds the position of Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy.

The announcement comes after remarks made by Cabinet spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa, indicating that the rollout of Starlink encountered hold-ups because certain technical details within the pact between SpaceX and the government remained unaddressed. Since these concerns weren’t tackled by April, this led to a brief halt in the initiative’s progress.

Starlink’s launch into the Sri Lankan market received official approval in August 2024 following permission from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL).
