Tajik Minister Confirms CASA-1000 Project to Be Finished by December 2026

On Sunday, First Deputy Minister for Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, Jamshed Shoimzoda stated that the significant energy initiative known as CASA-1000, connecting Pakistan and Tajikistan, is scheduled for completion by December 2026. This project aims to begin supplying 1000 megawatts of electrical power to Pakistan once operational.

The ambitious initiative aims to become fully functional by January 2027, at which point it will enhance bilateral collaboration in the energy domain between these nations. This development heralds a fresh start for sustainable and eco-friendly power ventures across both territories, as highlighted by Jamshed Shoimzoda, the First Deputy Minister for Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, during an interview with a press agency in Dushanbe (Tajikistan).

The Tajik energy minister stated that Tajikistan aims to fully transition to green energy and achieve zero emissions by 2027. During this period, the country will strive to collaborate with neighboring nations on implementing various green energy initiatives.

The CASA-1000 energy project will have a transmission capacity of 1,300 megawatts, serving as an energy bridge among Tajikistan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, providing clean power, he stated. He added that large-scale infrastructure initiatives would advantage all involved parties through meeting their energy requirements and enhancing regional interconnectivity. Shoimzoda mentioned that Tajikistan can potentially export up to 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, bringing benefits to every country within the area like Pakistan.

He stated that Tajikistan presently possesses the capability to produce 500 billion kilowatt-hours of electrical energy, making it the leader in hydroelectric power within neighboring nations. The minister mentioned that Tajikistan boasts ownership of the two largest dams in the region, namely the Nurek Dam and the Rogun Dam, each with an installed capacity for generating 6,600 megawatts of electricity.

The Nurek Dam stands as the second-tallest dam globally at 300 meters (984 feet), boasting a generating capability of 3000 megawatts. It has created the biggest reservoir in Tajikistan, holding up to 10.5 cubic kilometers. Currently undergoing expansion, upon completion, it aims to become the tallest dam in the world, eclipsing even the present height of the Nurek Dam itself.

He mentioned that the Rogun Dam is currently being constructed and will become the tallest dam globally, standing at an impressive height of 335 meters (1,099 feet). This soil-filled structure located on the Vakhsh River will have a generating capacity of 3,600 megawatts.

The Rogun Dam is anticipated to increase Tajikistan’s energy output twofold and plays a vital role in achieving the nation's energy self-sufficiency. According to the minister, Tajikistan has already been supplying electrical power to neighboring nations such as Afghanistan and plans to establish itself as a central figure in regional energy distribution. This initiative aims to introduce an epoch of eco-friendly energy generation and enhanced financial growth across the area. The Central Asia-South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project (CASA-1000), costing around $1.2 billion, is aimed at enhancing interconnectedness among four countries: Tajikistan, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan.
