CSS Igbo-Etche Triumphs in NLNG 2025 Science Quiz

Community Secondary School, Igbo-Etche, Wins 2025 NLNG Science Quiz Competition

In a highly anticipated event in Port Harcourt, Community Secondary School, Igbo-Etche, emerged as the champion of the 2025 NLNG Science Quiz Competition. The school outperformed seven other top contenders in a fiercely competitive grand finale, showcasing exceptional skills and knowledge in science.

The competition, themed “Renewable Energy Solutions,” attracted brilliant science students from across Rivers State. In the Senior Secondary Class 2 (SS2) category, Community Secondary School, Igbo-Etche secured the top position with an impressive score of 65,041 points. Government Secondary School, GRA, came in second with 63,982 points, while Bonny National Grammar School took third place with 55,359 points.

The victory was attributed to the school's accuracy, speed, and deep understanding of science concepts, particularly in clean energy. The competition consisted of three rigorous phases: a championship round, a science project exhibition, and a grand finale.

Science Project Exhibition Highlights

During the Science Project Exhibition, Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School claimed first place for their innovative project that generated electrical circuit power from renewable sources. Bonny National Grammar School followed closely with an invention focused on biogas and energy derived from food waste. Community Secondary School, Kira-Tai, secured third place for their solar stove project.

For the Senior Secondary Class 1 (SS1) category, the contest concluded at the championship stage. Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Khana, won first place, with Niger Delta Science School, Rumuola, taking second and Government Secondary School, Abua, securing third.

Other notable finalists in the SS2 category included Government Secondary School, Eneka (4th), Niger Delta Science School, Obio/Akpor (5th), Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Port Harcourt (6th), Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Khana (7th), and Government Secondary School, Abua (8th).

Commitment to Science Education and Sustainability

Sophia Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, emphasized the company’s dedication to science education and sustainability. She highlighted the global shift towards cleaner, greener energy and noted that NLNG is playing a key role by exporting LNG, a cleaner fossil fuel, and supplying LPG to Nigerian homes.

“The quiz is not just about winning; it's about investing in education and inspiring the scientists, engineers, and innovators of tomorrow,” Horsfall said. She added that the initiative has reached over 200 public schools since its inception, providing young talents with opportunities to thrive.

“Science is the heartbeat of progress. That’s why we support platforms like this, where young minds can discover their potential,” she continued.

Educational Leadership and Environmental Awareness

Dr. Azibaolanari Uzoma-Nwogu, Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Education, represented by Tam Job Inisefiekabo, praised the quiz theme as timely and critical. She emphasized the importance of engaging students in discussions and solutions around renewable energy as the global community faces challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and energy insecurity.

“By involving our students in these conversations, we are taking a step in the right direction toward a sustainable future,” she stated.

The NLNG Science Quiz Competition remains one of the company’s flagship educational initiatives in Rivers State. Its primary goal is to promote academic excellence and develop the capacity of Nigeria’s future energy leaders.

Through continuous efforts and support, the competition continues to inspire and empower students, fostering a new generation of innovators and problem-solvers in the field of science and technology.
