Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas Emerges as Strong Contender for Cadillac’s 2026 Lineup

Valtteri Bottas, the former Formula 1 driver and current reserve for Mercedes, is now being considered as a top candidate to join the newly formed Cadillac team when it makes its entry into the championship in 2026. The decision comes as the fledgling squad prepares for its first steps in the world of Formula 1, with key figures set to attend the British Grand Prix next month.

Key Personnel and Strategic Meetings

The Cadillac team’s leadership, including team principal Graeme Lowdon and Dan Towriss, head of the TWG Group that has taken a central role in the project, will be present at Silverstone. Alongside them, several meetings are scheduled with representatives from the drivers currently under negotiation. The aim is to finalize the signing of the first driver within the next few weeks, while discussions for the second seat could extend into September.

Since early spring, various names have been floated as potential candidates for the team’s lineup. Initially, Sergio Pérez was seen as the frontrunner, but his recent absence from the scene has shifted the dynamics. Now, Bottas has emerged as a strong contender, having never concealed his desire to return to full-time Formula 1 after being released by Sauber at the end of last season.

Bottas’ Potential Role and Strategic Considerations

Bottas' name has gained traction in recent weeks, and he is now viewed as the stronger candidate. However, the team’s selection criteria remain unclear. If the goal is to secure two experienced drivers, Bottas would not be competing directly with Pérez, who might become his teammate. Alternatively, if the plan is to pair an experienced driver with a young talent, the choice between Bottas and Pérez could be more competitive, with the Finn holding a slight advantage.

Social Media Signals and Strategic Messaging

Bottas has made his intentions known through subtle yet clear messages on social media. Recently, he posted a video where he interacted with a Cadillac SUV, commenting on the seating arrangement. “What a nice seat,” he said, placing his hand on the driver’s seat before adding, “I see there are two seats – both seem free.” A voice off-camera invited him to sit down, but Bottas responded, “Not yet.”

This move highlights how Bottas has leveraged his social media presence to send strategic messages, making his interest in Cadillac evident.

Potential Candidates for the Second Seat

If Cadillac opts for a mix of experience and youth, the second seat is likely to go to Felipe Drugovich. The Brazilian, currently serving as Aston Martin’s reserve driver, has shown determination to secure a full-time F1 seat. Despite turning down offers from other racing series, he has yet to find a permanent spot in the sport.

Rumors within the F1 paddock suggest that neither of the current Aston Martin drivers are keen on seeing Drugovich take part in meaningful track sessions. This has led to speculation about Lance Stroll's extensive medical treatment for a wrist injury between the Spanish and Canadian Grands Prix.

Drugovich has remained focused on his goal, declining other opportunities to explore every possibility of landing an F1 drive. His negotiations with Cadillac appear to be the most promising so far, offering a realistic chance of securing a place in the 2026 lineup.
