Road Safety Crackdown in Volta Region Seizes 60 Vehicles
In a significant move to enforce road safety regulations, the Volta Regional Office of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has seized 60 vehicles and motorcycles for violating established traffic rules. This operation was part of a two-day joint enforcement exercise conducted by several key agencies in Ho, the regional capital.
Madam Joana Fafa Ayer, the Volta Regional Head of the NRSA, highlighted that the initiative involved collaboration between the NRSA, the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD). The effort aimed to tackle common violations and promote adherence to road safety standards.
During the exercise, which took place from June 25 to July 26, 2025, authorities targeted several high-traffic areas including the market top, GN Bank premises, Trafalgar Road, Royal Hospital enclave, and the Ho Zongo community. The confiscated vehicles included 10 private and commercial cars, as well as 50 rickshaws, motorcycles, and tricycles.
Common Violations Identified
Madam Ayer outlined the primary violations that led to the confiscation of these vehicles. These included drivers and riders operating without valid driving licenses, unlicensed or underage riders, vehicles lacking number plates, unregistered motorcycles and tricycles, and the use of non-approved lighting systems. Additionally, some vehicles were found to be missing essential safety equipment such as spare tires, fire extinguishers, and warning triangles.
The enforcement action also emphasized the importance of compliance with legal requirements. Offenders were given a two-day grace period to renew or obtain valid driving licenses, roadworthy certificates, and insurance. Those who failed to meet the deadline faced legal consequences, with some being arraigned before the court.
Commitment to Road Safety
Madam Ayer reiterated the commitment of the NRSA and its partners to ensuring that all road users adhere to safety regulations. She stated that the exercise would be extended to other districts and municipalities within the region, signaling a broader strategy to improve road safety across the Volta region.
The NRSA has also intensified public education campaigns on road safety regulations. Madam Ayer emphasized that offenders have no excuse for their actions, as the authority continues to raise awareness about the importance of following traffic laws.
Impact of the Enforcement Exercise
This crackdown is expected to have a lasting impact on road safety in the region. By targeting violations head-on, the NRSA and its partners are not only addressing immediate issues but also setting a precedent for stricter enforcement in the future. The collaboration between various agencies demonstrates a unified approach to tackling road safety challenges.
The exercise serves as a reminder to all drivers and riders of their responsibility to comply with traffic regulations. It also highlights the need for continuous efforts to educate the public and ensure that road safety remains a priority.
As the NRSA plans to expand its operations to other areas, the focus will remain on reducing accidents and promoting safer road conditions for everyone. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for similar efforts in other regions, reinforcing the importance of collective action in achieving road safety goals.
