Bus driver's fare consideration earns heartfelt gift

A story about a bus driver in Seoul receiving a handwritten letter and a 10,000 Korean won bill from a middle-aged female passenger has moved many.

Mr. A, a driver operating Bus No. 160 in Seoul, posted photos of the handwritten letter and the 10,000 Korean won bill on an online community last the 16th, saying, “I received such a precious gift.”

According to Mr. A, on that day, middle-aged female passenger Ms. B, who boarded at the Mapo Police Station bus stop, found that her transportation card had insufficient balance when she tapped it. Ms. B, who had no other payment method, only had a 10,000 Korean won bill.

After confirming that the passenger’s card balance was 700 Korean won, Mr. A showed consideration by saying, “I will process it as the children’s fare, 550 Korean won, this time.” Although it is common to suggest a bank transfer, it would have been difficult for the elderly passenger. Mr. A asked for understanding by saying, “I will charge the children’s fare of 550 Korean won,” and the passenger apologized, saying, “I’m sorry.” The bus then departed in good spirits.

A while later, as the bus approached Jongno 5-ga, Ms. B handed Mr. A a small piece of paper as she got off. Upon arriving at the terminal and checking the paper, it contained the handwritten letter and a 10,000 Korean won bill.

The letter read, “In Mapo, I lost my mobile phone and found it at the police station’s lost and found center within 10 minutes. Someone kindly brought it to the center. Additionally, I also received your consideration when you charged the fare as a child’s fare despite my transportation card balance being insufficient.”

It added, “I noticed there was no place to donate to a piggy bank at the Mapo Police Station’s civil affairs office. Since I received such kindness from two places today, I also wanted to do something. Driver, please treat yourself and your friends to a cool drink. Thank you.”

Mr. A said, “When I told the company manager, they allowed me to keep the gift, saying it was given by a passenger as a token of gratitude. Looking at the letter, I could see that the passenger was relieved to have quickly found their lost mobile phone thanks to another citizen. They must have been embarrassed when they found out their card balance was insufficient while riding my bus, but they were very pleased that the issue was resolved quickly. I felt even more proud. Anyway, I was about to collapse from exhaustion during the commuting hour, but thanks to this precious gift, I gained more strength.”

Netizens who came across this story reacted with comments such as, “Reading this warms my heart. During the tough commuting hour when most people are busy and tired, the story of the driver and the passenger makes me think that life is still worth living,” “It’s touching. Stay healthy always,” and “This is a heartwarming story of consideration and gratitude.”
